MP Ong Tee Keat. says B.N ‘S lack of Morals a malaise threatening to erode the integrity and competitiveness of a nation.
MP Ong Tee Keat.
No doubt it is widely deemed a malaise threatening to erode the integrity and competitiveness of a nation. Nonetheless, the incidences of integrity-breach implicating politicians, especially those in the power corridor, have never ceased to escalate. In the recently released Global Financial Integrity (GFI) report, Malaysia was identified as the 4th most corrupt nation in the world, losing a total of US$338 billion (RM1.08 trillion) in illicit outflows over the first decade of the century. GFI reported that the Malaysian increase was “at a scale seen in few Asian countries”. In January, it had reported that RM930 billion flowed out of Malaysia from 2000 to 2008, growing to RM218 billion per year from an initial RM71 billion in that period. Not only is the outflow of the country’s wealth astronomical, it shows how devastating corruption or ill gotten gains can do to a nation’s health. It also shows those involved in capital flight activities have no love for their country, looting all they can before abandoning or emigrating, without hesitation, when the country’s system collapses.Notwithstanding this, partisans’ commitment to graft fight still leaves much to be desired. Parties from both sides of the divide are still very much indulged in finger-pointing and blaming games in the name of exposing corruption perpetrated by their rivals. In contrast, integrity breach in their backyard in many instances remains a moral squalor.Indeed the real litmus test of a political party’s commitment to graft fight lies in its stance and courage in handling cases implicating its own leaders. At present, understandably people would only be convinced by the authorities’ determination in upholding integrity within the administration if heads were to roll following the expose of malpractices. Repeated recurrence of the same malaise would trigger crisis of confidence to the detriment of the government of the day. Now that time has come for all Malaysians to translate our common aspiration of weeding corruption into concrete deeds that could benefit the nation. This is going to be a real test to our commitment to upholding political integrity during our era. Any apathy to address this nationwide concern is believed to only further erode the nation’s competitiveness in the global perspective, thus plummeting Malaysia’s standing in the World Corruption Perception Index.Similarly, hollow platitude of political pledge designed to placate the people is totally meaningless and irrelevant in burnishing our national image related to graft fight. It would ultimately alienate the people from the hypocritical partisan politics.Malaysians’ key resolution for 2012 must, therefore, focus on walking the talk to ensure our very own future for generations to come.
